‘Sorry Dad, I Will Beat Super Eagles Today’ — Ugandan Striker, Uche Ikpeazu Declares

Uche Ikpeazu, Nigerian-born Ugandan striker, says he hopes to help the Cranes defeat the Super Eagles in their final match of Group C of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ikpeazu was born in England to a Nigerian father and a Ugandan mother. The 30-year-old only made his full international debut for his mother’s country in September 2025.

Speaking about his Nigerian heritage, Ikpeazu revealed his emotional connection to his father’s country remains strong.

“My dad is from Delta state. I am half-Nigerian; that is where my dad is from. So there is always going to be an emotional attachment,” he said.

Nigeria, already qualified for the knockout round, will face Uganda on Tuesday at the Stade Foot Fès.

Uganda are fourth in the group with just one point from two games. The Cranes must beat Nigeria to get a glimmer of a chance to qualify out of the group.

Ikpeazu said his Nigerian connection will not hold him back from doing what is needed for Uganda.

“I am Ugandan as well, and I play for Uganda. I will be hoping to beat Nigeria. So, Dad, I am sorry,” the striker said.

“I do not have a planned celebration against Nigeria. But you know in football, emotions can get the better of you.”

The Super Eagles are top of Group C with six points. They defeated Tanzania 2-1 in the first game and held on for a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Tunisia in the second.
