Jeremiah Obaji Nworu, the Ebonyi-born trek-a-thon hero whose endurance walk captured public attention earlier this year, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area slated for August 22, 2026.
Nworu first came into public view earlier this year after embarking on a trek-a-thon that drew attention across Ebonyi State: he trekked for 17 days, covering more than 600 kilometres on foot from Ikorodu, Lagos to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

According to the hero, the long-distance trek, which tested his physical strength and mental endurance, was his own way of showing appreciation and support for the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, who restored peace in his hometown, ending the long-standing communal war that had taken many lives and displaced others.
Throughout the journey, Nworu spoke about discipline, unity, and the significance of peace, a message that resonated strongly with many, especially youths who followed the trek closely on social media and in their communities.
Speaking with Igbere TV on Sunday evening, Nworu announced his ambition to serve as chairman, saying his decision was driven by a long-standing desire to serve his people at the grassroots and contribute meaningfully to the development of Ohaukwu.
According to him, the trek-a-thon that brought him into the spotlight was never just about physical strength, but about drawing attention to discipline, peace, and unity.
“The trek was a message. It was about showing that with determination, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. I now want to bring that same spirit into leadership,” he said.
Jeremiah Obaji Nworu is a native of Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. He rose to prominence after completing a widely publicised trek-a-thon, an achievement that earned him admiration across the state, particularly among young people.
Known among supporters as disciplined and resilient, Nworu has over the years been involved in youth advocacy and community-based initiatives, often speaking on the need for self-reliance, mentorship, and purposeful leadership.
According to Nworu, his administration, if elected, would focus on grassroots development, with attention to rural infrastructure, education, healthcare delivery, and job creation for young people.
He also pledged to run an open and accountable local government, saying leadership must be close enough to feel the daily struggles of the people.
