“Governance Must Put People First” — Mascot Kalu Declares

Abia State 2027 governorship aspirant, Chief Mascot Uzor-Kalu (MUK), has reaffirmed his commitment to people-oriented governance, stressing that true leadership must be anchored on the welfare, aspirations, and everyday realities of the people.

Speaking to journalists in Umuahia on Monday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship hopeful said Abia’s long-term progress depends on a governance model that listens to citizens and delivers practical, measurable solutions to their challenges.

According to him, sustainable development can only be achieved when public policies are shaped by the real needs of the people rather than political convenience.

“Governance must return to its core purpose—serving the people with sincerity and accountability,” Mascot stated.

He emphasized that leadership must translate into tangible improvements in living standards, infrastructure, and opportunities, particularly for the youth.

“If governance does not improve living conditions, expand infrastructure, and create opportunities for our young people, then it has failed in its responsibility. My vision for Abia is simple—put the people first in everything we do,” he said.

The APC aspirant further identified transparency and strong institutions as critical pillars of people-centred leadership, noting that public trust is strengthened when resources are properly managed and institutions are allowed to function independently.

“Abians deserve a government they can trust. Transparency, accountability, and fairness must form the foundation of leadership if we are truly serious about progress,” he added.

Chief Mascot Uzor-Kalu also highlighted economic empowerment as a key focus of his vision for the state, stressing that job creation, support for small and medium-scale enterprises, and investment in skills development are essential for reducing poverty and driving economic growth.

“We cannot talk about development without addressing unemployment. Our youths are creative and hardworking. With the right policies and support, Abia can become a hub of productivity and innovation,” he noted.

He called for inclusive governance that carries along women, youths, and rural communities, insisting that development must be evenly distributed across the state.

“Every community matters. From Aba to the most remote villages, governance must be felt and experienced by the people,” Mascot said.

Reiterating the motivation behind his governorship ambition, Chief Mascot Uzor-Kalu said his quest is driven by a desire to serve rather than personal interest, adding that leadership demands humility, sacrifice, and integrity.

“Public office is a privilege. It comes with responsibility and sacrifice. That is the kind of leadership I stand for,” he concluded.
