BREAKDOWN : For Those Confused About the “Life Imprisonment + 25 Years” Sentencing of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu

Here is my Layman Breakdown ;

The Court, having found him guilty on all 7 counts brought against him by the Federal Government, proceeded to deliver its judgment after listening to the submissions of the prosecution.

Justice Omotosho pronounced the following verdicts:
• On the terrorism-related counts, he sentenced Kanu to Life Imprisonment instead of the death penalty.
• On Count 3: he sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment.
• On Count 7: he sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment, without the option of a fine.

Justice Omotosho further ruled that all the sentences shall run concurrently.

What does this mean?

Running sentences concurrently means they are served at the same time, not one after another. In simple terms:
• Kanu will serve the highest sentence among them, which is Life Imprisonment,
• While the 20 years and 5 years are naturally absorbed into the life sentence due to concurrency.

So, instead of adding up to 25 years before life imprisonment, the concurrent ruling means:

He will serve Life Imprisonment as the definitive sentence.
