Kalu: Reevaluating The Role of Legislators in Nigeria

It is often said that the primary duty of lawmakers is to legislate, as outlined in civic education. However, in the Nigerian context, this definition falls short of capturing the full spectrum of their responsibilities.

Lawmakers here are expected to fulfill multifaceted roles that extend beyond legislation. They serve as project supervisors, providers of social welfare, creators of employment opportunities, and, at times, first responders to emergencies. This expansive role sets a high standard, which many Nigerians use as a benchmark for assessing political performance.

Based on this criterion, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has not only met the expectations but has significantly surpassed them.

Let us focus on substantiated facts rather than emotions or political rhetoric.

Currently, a cashew processing facility is being built in Abia North, a vital development. This is not merely an industrial project; it represents a transformative initiative poised to become the largest of its kind in the region. It is anticipated to generate over 5,000 jobs, providing more than just processing capabilities; it aims to convert economic challenges into opportunities, especially in areas such as Isuikwuato and Umunneochi, where cashew production is plentiful yet underexploited.

This initiative exemplifies economic foresight.

Since rejoining the Senate in 2019, Senator Kalu has overseen the construction of upwards of 140 rural access roads. These are not mere expressways; they are essential farm-to-market routes that have fundamentally altered transportation logistics and community connectivity. Roads such as Ndi Orieke–Ohafia and Amankalu–Abiriba are now crucial conduits for commerce and community interaction.

In terms of education, progress is evident. The establishment of over 130 new schools and the renovation of more than 100 others have occurred under his influence. Furthermore, thousands of students have benefited from educational materials—bags, textbooks, uniforms—distributed free of charge. This is not a new endeavor but a continuation of his legacy from his tenure as Governor of Abia State more than twenty years ago.

When inquiries arise regarding his contributions, I urge observers to assess the visible changes across Abia North. The evidence is concrete and impactful.

Beyond infrastructural gains, it is essential to discuss the embodiment of leadership qualities—particularly the political courage demonstrated by Senator Kalu.

Many overlook that Kalu earned the designation of Action Governor, a title bestowed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Ironically, it was Obasanjo who eventually attempted to marginalize him for opposing the controversial third-term initiative.

At a juncture when others acquiesced, Kalu remained resolute. He mobilized support, articulated dissent, and engaged in a campaign against a potential constitutional crisis. His advocacy reached beyond national borders, enlisting support from African leaders and international allies, firmly establishing that Nigeria’s democracy was non-negotiable.

Such actions reflect profound “courage”.

In the 2007 presidential election, Kalu, representing the new Progressive Peoples Alliance, surprised established political norms by securing third place—with over five million votes—trailing only Buhari and Yar’Adua. Moreover, his party achieved victorious governorship elections in Abia and Imo States, showcasing an extraordinary feat even while one candidate was embroiled in legal issues during the elections, due to a combination of robust organizational strategies and grassroots support.

These narratives portray a political figure who has not only endured but has also adapted and delivered consistently.

As we approach the 2027 elections, discussions about Kalu’s return for a third Senate term emerge.

To those contemplating this question, I assert: Why not?

In mature democracies, “experience is invaluable”. Senior legislators are pivotal in chairing influential committees, mentoring emerging lawmakers, and shaping national policies. If the South-East is to aspire toward electing a Senate President or gaining substantial legislative authority, it is imperative that we support individuals with the requisite “weight”, proven “record”, and “leadership capability”.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is among those few who embody these qualities.

While no leader is without shortcomings, amidst a political landscape characterized by hollow promises and superficial gestures, he has exemplified what “genuine impact” entails.

Let us, therefore, refrain from being swayed by trivialities or narratives generated in isolated discussions. Our leaders should be evaluated based on “results”, not speculation. Based on “legacy”, not mere labels.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu deserves his position—not just within the Senate but in the ongoing narrative of a region aspiring for significance, development, and honor.

For this, he merits our acknowledgment and thoughtful consideration.

Thank you.
