The Anambra State Police Command has rearrested Ikemefuna Ossai, a key suspect in the kidnapping and brutal murder of Justice Azuka, the late member representing Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly. Ossai was apprehended on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State, following an intelligence-driven operation.
According to a press statement issued on Tuesday by Police Spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was tracked across multiple states in Nigeria and a neighboring West African country. The operation, led by Chief Superintendent of Police Ifeanyi Iburu, former Officer-in-Charge of the Anambra Special Anti-Robbery Squad, culminated in Ossai’s capture. During the arrest, Ossai attempted to flee but was subdued, sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg.
Ossai was initially arrested on February 6, 2025, the same day security operatives discovered Azuka’s body near the Second Niger Bridge, following his abduction on December 24, 2024. However, Ossai escaped custody on February 18 alongside another gang member in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, while assisting police in apprehending another suspect linked to the crime.
The Police Command expressed regret for the operational lapses that allowed Ossai’s earlier escape and has briefed stakeholders, including Azuka’s family and the leadership of the Anambra State House of Assembly, on the development. The Commissioner of Police assured continued transparency and accountability.
Ikenga noted that intelligence obtained from Ossai is aiding ongoing efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitive and dismantle the criminal network behind the crime. “The Anambra State Police Command reiterates its unwavering resolve to bring all perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety and security of Ndi Anambra,” the statement concluded.
