Senior lawyer and human rights advocate, Femi Falana has threatened to file a suit against the former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida over the content of his autobiography.
Babangida had in the past week presented his autobiography to the public.
In the book, the retired military General detailed some of the incidents that took place during his time in the military, his service as the chief of army staff and military Head of State.
One of the key issues addressed by Babangida was the outcome of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and its annulment.
According to Babangida, the 1993 election was won by the late Moshood Abiola and was Nigeria’s freest and most credible poll at the time.
He also stated that he regrets the annulment of the election, leading to a lot of reaction and outrage from the citizenry.
However, speaking on Channels Television, the senior advocate of Nigeria said Babangida maliciously prosecuted him over his stance on the 1993 election.
As one of those jailed by Babangida for challenging the military regime, Falana said he would be teaming up with other lawyers to challenge his undeserved prosecution.
“I’ve assembled a team of lawyers, they’re looking into it. Because he [IBB] has now brought it to life by now admitting there was no basis for my prosecution because he now says, Abiola won the election which was the basis for our protest.
“He’s also saying he shouldn’t have postponed the terminal date of his transition programme of which we were fighting for which means there was no basis for my prosecution. It was malicious.
“Again, massive infringement of my human rights. Because when you keep me in Kuje prison you deny me my right to liberty, my freedom of movement and you also violate my right to choose the government of my country. The man who did has just come out to say, ‘I did it wrongly.” he added.
