The Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele narrowly escaped an attack by protesting students in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Wednesday.
The deputy governor’s convoy was en route to the 35 Artillery Brigade Alabama, Abeokuta, to represent Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations when it encountered the protesting students.
A video circulating on social media platforms shows the deputy governor’s convoy attempting to change route amid the protest, with gunshots heard in the background.
The students, reportedly from the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), were armed with sticks and other projectiles.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the protesting students became increasingly aggressive upon realizing the deputy governor was in the convoy. The students attempted to demobilize the convoy, leading to a detour to the deputy governor’s lodge to allow the protesters to pass peacefully.
The statement also revealed that some of the deputy governor’s security vehicles were damaged, and security operatives were injured during the incident.
“Noteworthy is that there was obstruction of Vehicular movement, while some of her security vehicle was damaged and her security operatives were also hurt in the process of maintaining law and order contrary to the news making rounds in the press,” the press statement added.
