2027 : House of Reps Pushes for Independent Candidacy

The House of Representatives has renewed its efforts to pass the Independent Candidacy Bill ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The House has launched a dedicated website to facilitate discussions on the bill, hoping to increase public awareness and engagement.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, October 17, Hon. Akin Rotimi (APC-Ekiti), the House spokesperson and sponsor of the bill, emphasised that the bill aims to broaden political participation across Nigeria.

“This bill seeks to deepen political involvement and give more Nigerians the opportunity to run for office without relying on political parties,” Rotimi explained.

Nigeria has experienced seven electoral cycles since the start of the Fourth Republic, and according to Rotimi, it is essential to refine the system ahead of the eighth cycle in 2027.

“As we approach the next elections, it is important to improve. The Independent Candidacy Bill is one such reform,” he stated.

“We have created a website where you can find detailed information, particularly clarifications on what the bill is not, as there are many misconceptions about its technical aspects,” he stated while addressing common misunderstandings about the bill.

The Independent Candidacy Bill has faced opposition since its introduction in the 7th Assembly and has been recommitted to the Committee on Constitutional Review for further examination.

“This is a constitutional amendment bill, and it requires substantial input from stakeholders. We’ve conducted extensive advocacy, and the feedback so far has been positive,” Rotimi added.

The bill’s reintroduction reflects the House’s dedication to political reforms despite its previous setbacks in the 8th and 9th assemblies.
