Nigerian actor and movie producer, Aremu Afolayan, has expressed frustration over the worsening economic situation in the country, saying he regrets not engaging in cybercrime, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo” in Nigeria.
The 44-year-old actor made this known in an Instagram post, where he lamented that, “All of the days when they talked about Yahoo Yahoo, today is the day I regret most that I didn’t do it. Legitimate hustling never felt so useless.”
Afolayan’s outburst follows the growing despair among Nigerians as they face severe economic hardship in the country.
The rising prices of essential commodities, coupled with an increasing unemployment rate, have left many struggling to make ends meet.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate surged to 5.0 per cent in the third quarter of 2023, up from 4.2 per cent in the previous quarter.
President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to reform the economy have worsened the suffering of citizens.
On the day of his inauguration thirteen months ago, President Tinubu announced the end of fuel subsidy which had kept petrol prices relatively low.
The sharp increase in petrol price occasioned by the subsidy removal has led to a significant increase in the cost of living as businesses pass increased transportation and energy costs to consumers.
