Sue state governors over LG caretaker committees – Reps urges AGF

The House of Representatives has asked the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to sue state governors operating caretaker committees at the local governments.

The lower chamber urged Fagbemi to institute legal action against any state that terminates the unexpired tenure of local government officials.

The House also urged the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, to halt all allocations to the local governments run by unelected officials.

This resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Ademorin Kuye on Tuesday.

IgbereTV recalls that the federal government is in court with states over local government autonomy.

In the motion, Kuye said 21 states currently have caretaker committees running the local governments.

He described the situation as an affront against democracy and the Constitution which guarantees tenure of local government elected officials.

“The number of states acting with impunity and in utter disregard of the constitution continues to increase, as not less than 21 state governors are currently running local government councils with caretaker committees,” he said.

The motion was adopted by the House without debate
