The Supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has declared that “Israel will be punished” for the attack that killed members of the Revolutionary Guards, including two generals, at the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus.
Khamenei said Iran would ensure Israel regret the crime against his country.
In a message on his official website, the Supreme leader said: “The evil Zionist regime will be punished at the hands of our brave men. We will make them regret this crime and the other ones.”
This is coming when Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard said that seven of its members were killed in an airstrike that struck the country’s consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus.
Syrian officials and state media had pinned the airstrike in Damascus on Israel.
The strike on Iran’s embassy compound appears to signify an escalation of Israel’s targeting of Iranian military officials and their allies in Syria, which has intensified since Hamas militants — who are supported by Iran — attacked Israel on October 7.
