Plateau: Police confirm 15 villages affected, 96 dead in Christmas eve attacks

The Plateau State Police Command on Tuesday revealed that 96 people were killed attacks on some communities in Barkin Ladi and Bokkos local government areas on Christmas Eve.

The Command also revealed that 12 villages, 221 houses, 27 motorcycles and eight motor-vehicles were burnt in Bokkos LGA.

It revealed that three villages were affected in Barkin-Ladi LGA namely; NTV, Hurum and Darawat.

This was disclosed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, in a press statement made available to journalists in Jos, the State capital.

He said, “The Commissioner of Police Plateau State Command, CP Okoro J. Alawari, expresses grief over the deadly attacks that took place in some remote villages of Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State carried out by some yet to identified assailants on the 24/12/2023 at odd hours of the night.”

According to him, “On the 24th December, 2023, at about 22:00 hours, the following 12 villages in Bokkos LGA were attacked; Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darwat and Butura Kampani village.

“Similarly, on 24th December, 2023, at about 22:45 hours, three villages in Barkin-Ladi LGA namely; NTV, Hurum and Darawat were also attacked.

“In order to prevent further carnage, the Commissioner of Police have directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police incharge Operations (DC DOPs) to relocate to Bokkos LGA.

“The CP has also deployed high-power delegation of well armed operational forces to the troubled areas to prevent further attacks and also assess the level of damages in the affected areas.

“However, findings from the assessment of the ugly incidents in Bokkos LGA revealed that the total number of villages attacked is Twelve, two hundred and twenty-one houses were set ablaze, twenty- seven motorcycles were burnt, eight motor-vehicles were burnt down and over seventy -nine persons were killed; while seventeen deaths was recorded in Barkin-ladi LGA.”

The CP sympathizes with the families of those who lost their loved ones in the gruesome attack.

“Investigation and monitoring of the incidents is still on. Further development will be communicated soon”, he assured
