The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two persons involved in the recent lynching of suspects in the state.
On November 1, an angry mob lynched two suspects, Chinedu and Omama, who are said to be brothers, at the Onitsha Main Market.
The police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed this in a statement on Friday, November 17.
The police quoted the state police commissioner, Aderemi Adeoye, as saying that the kind of situation where jungle justice is done by lynching and killing suspects without trial is no longer acceptable.
The police commissioner cautioned residents not to take the law into their own hands by engaging in jungle justice, adding that the perpetrators would be charged with murder.
Adeoye said the lynching of criminal suspects by mobs is bestial and worse than the victims.
The PPRO said that two suspects involved in a recent mob lynching in which a suspect died were arrested.
Someone steals a cell phone and the mob kills him,” he said. The charge of stealing a cell phone carries three years in prison.
Those who lynch commit murder, which carries the death penalty.”
Adeoye commended the residents of Anambra for their eternal vigilance and cooperation for the peace and security of the state and called on them to report any criminal matter to the police.
‘If you do not get justice, please contact my office directly. I assure the people of Anambra State that the Command is always fulfilling its responsibility to maintain law and order. Relying on self-help is not necessary and will not be tolerated,” he added.
