Godwin Emefiele is granted bail by the court.

Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Special High Court of the Federal Capital has granted bail to former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

At his bail hearing today, November 8, the judge ordered that Emefiele be immediately released to his lawyers and ordered his lawyers to appear in court for his arraignment next week or whenever he is required to appear.

Judge Adeniyi ruled that the CBN president must leave his passport with the court’s chief registrar while awaiting arraignment.

The judge raised eyebrows that President Emefiele was being detained without trial. The court must also not overlook the fact that Mr. Emefiele has been detained for 151 days, and the federal government and the Attorney General must comply with the court’s order,” he said.

As with the preliminary objection, the substantive motion on notice was adjourned to November 17, 2023 for hearing.
