Prof.Umaru Shehu, a former VC of UNN, passes away at age of 97.

At the age of 97, Umaru Shehu, the first Emeritus Professor in Nigeria, passed away.

 

This information was released in a statement on Monday, October 2, in Maiduguri by Dr. Bulama Gubio, the secretary of the Borno Elders Forum.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Shehu, a renowned professor of medicine, passed away early on Monday, according to Gubio.

 

 

 

 

 

 

“We regret to inform you of the passing of our founding father of the BEF as well as the Kanem Borno Historical and Cultural Foundation (KBHCF).

 

 

 

 

 

 

“The founding fathers of BEF were Maina Ibrahim Damcida, Dr. Shettima Ali Monguno, and Professor Emeritus Umaru Shehu, CFR.

 

 

 

 

 

 

“All three have already left. He was the last remaining titan. May Allah show them mercy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gubio prayed, “May All have mercy upon our leading professor of community medicine and global leader in the field of medicine.”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Shehu served as the university’s vice chancellor while it was located in Enugu State’s Nsukka.

Furthermore, he was the first professor of community health in Northern Nigeria.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Prof. Shehu co-founded the Borno Elders Forum and was the founder of the Kanem Borno Historical and Cultural Foundation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

He was the former president of the Nigerian Academy of Science and a retired professor at the University of Maiduguri’s School of Community Health.

In Nigeria’s Maiduguri, Shehu was born on December 8th, 1930. He attended Maiduguri Elementary School from 1935 to 1940, Maiduguri Middle School from 1941 to 1943, Kaduna College from 1944 to 1947, University College Ibadan from 1948 to 1953, and the University of Liverpool from 1953 to 1956 to 1966 to 1967.

 

 

 

 

 

 

University of London awarded Professor Shehu a Bachelor of Medicine degree.

In addition, he holds the position of Editor-in-Chief at the British Medical Journal and has received a fellowship from the Institute of Cancer Research.
