Echoes From Bruised Hearts

By Prince Noel Chinaza Agbo

It rained tears and sorrows on Saturday, September 23rd 2023 when the remains of Late Hon. Nelson Sylvester Nnachebem Duhu (Ofunwa) was laid to rest.

The events of the day which can best be described as a festival of pain began with a procession of his remains from Daughters of Divine Love Mortuary to Nsukka Local Government Council Headquarters for his valedictory plenary session.

Members of the council couldn’t hold back their tears when they saw their colleague being borne lifelessly into their chamber.

At the plenary, a roll call of the legislatures was taken but when the clerk called “Honourable Nelson Sylvester Ofunwa representing Eha-Ulo Ward”, there was no response unlike the usual “Present” answered by other councilors. Tears flowed ceaselessly.

The Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Council, Hon. Walter Ozioko while speaking at the valedictory plenary, expressed pain and regret that the community Hon. Nelson Ofunwa gave his life for, couldn’t save him when he was attacked.

He went on to assure the lifeless body of Hon. Nelson, his friends, colleagues and family members that the perpetrators of the dastardly act would be definitely fished out and prosecuted accordingly.

From the Local Government headquarters, his remains was taken to his home town, Eha-Alumona, accompanied by mammoth crowd of youths who were dressed in blacks and soaked in hot tears.

Recall that Hon. Nelson Sylvester Ofunwa was gruesomely assassinated by some heartless evil men who felt threatened by his fight against cultism and all forms of criminality and intimidation.

The aggrieved youths of the community presented a giant cow to the family of Nnachebem ahead of the burial as a mark of respect to their fallen hero.

After his body was committed to mother earth, the angry youths marched round the entire community mourning, grieving and praying for God to expose the people who had anything to do with Nelson’s sudden and painful death.
