Nigeria is “gradually losing one of the biggest intangible assets that make a nation strong, which is respect for the rule of law,” according to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.
Today, September 15, is International Democracy Day, and Obi celebrated by posting a statement on his X account that read, “Our dear nation has continued to swing dangerously away from the boundaries of true democracy.”. He continued by urging Nigerians to “remind ourselves of the necessity of working together to build and deepen our nation’s democracy.”.
The former governor of Anambra State urged all Nigerians to continue to be dedicated to establishing and defending our country’s democracy.
If left unchecked, the mindless destruction of the very principles and values upon which Nigeria’s democracy was founded will only drive the country further into anarchy.
The ongoing conflict between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government over transactional politics and endemic corruption has made it harder for our country to uphold democracy.
As a result, the pendulum of true democracy has continued to sway dangerously away from our beloved country.
One of the most important intangible factors contributing to a strong nation is respect for the rule of law, and this is something we are gradually losing.
I urge all Nigerians to continue to be dedicated to establishing and bolstering our country’s democracy.
I reiterate my commitment to a brand-new Nigeria that is genuinely democratic.
I’m fighting only to improve our society.
I firmly believe that if given good leadership, as I offer to provide, Nigeria will be advantageous to every Nigerian, which is the basis for my vision of a new and genuinely democratic Nigeria.
A brand-new Nigeria that is genuinely democratic is possible, so we must not give up on our country.
