The National/State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, which was in Kano on September 6, upheld Abdulmumini Jibrin Kofa’s election as the representative for Kiru/Bebeji in the House of Representatives.
Muhammad Said Kiru, the candidate for the All Progressive Congress, filed a petition, but it was denied by a three-member panel presided over by Justice Ngozi Flora.
The reason given was that no credible witnesses had been called to show that there had been disenfranchisement during the election.
In contrast to the petitioner’s claim, Justice Flora ruled that the documents presented to the tribunal by both parties showed that Kofa, a candidate for the New Nigeria People’s Party, resigned from his position as executive secretary of the Federal Housing Authority 30 days prior to the election.
The judge uttered;.
“The Petitioner has failed appallingly to demonstrate that there were electoral malpractices and that the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 as amended were not followed.
This petitioner is hereby dismissed due to lack of merit.
A joint and several award of N100,000 in costs is made in favor of the respondents and against the petitioner.
