The structure had 44 rooms and about 200 occupants, according to the ECTDA chairman.
A building collapse in Enugu Agric Quarters on the Mgbemena axis of Coal Camp claimed the lives of four children from the same family.
The chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Agency (ECTDA), Uche Anya, confirmed the incident after visiting the scene of the collapsed building on Saturday. Anya noted that the bungalow building collapsed on Friday night around 8pm following a downpour.
He claimed that although the building was converted to homes, it had been approved for animal husbandry.
The ECTDA chairman disclosed that the structure had 44 rooms and about 200 residents while lamenting that it was unfit for human habitation.
“We arrived at the location right away after receiving the intelligence.
In this incident, four kids died.
“Danger was just waiting to happen.
It was careless to build that.
“Humans shouldn’t have ever been allowed to live there. In fact, visit the area to observe.
There must have been more than 200 people living there, despite the fact that they purport to be engaged in animal husbandry and poultry.
44 of the rooms are occupied by people.
“The fence line was completely unacceptable; nobody does that,” Anya said.
“Unfortunately, the victims of that tragedy were innocent children, and it is very painful.”.
In order to prevent a repeat of the unfortunate incident, the agency’s chairman promised to keep raising awareness among the populace.
He claimed that under his direction, the agency’s compliance unit would ensure that buildings built by contractors and landlords strictly follow the approval plan.
Residents of the building and four additional buildings nearby were also given an immediate quit notice by the ECTDA.
