According to Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, the current state of insecurity in the South East region will soon come to an end.
He claimed that the Army and other security organizations are working around the clock to reduce the level of insecurity in the area.
According to igberetv, Lagbaja made this claim on Thursday during a meeting with the House of Representative Ad-Hoc committee looking into the murder and kidnapping in Umunochi Community in Abia State. He was represented by Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho, Deputy Director Operations Army Headquarters.
The head of the Army noted that kidnapping continues to pose a serious security risk, particularly in the two local government areas, noting that, particularly in July of this year, the region saw cases of kidnapping and attacks by criminals thought to be members of the indigenous Biafran people.
He claimed that the Nigerian police and other security agencies are working with the Army to reduce insecurity, but he also pointed out that the Nigerian army is in charge of the majority of the work.
“The House of Representative requested that the Nigeria Army submit a memorandum to the ad hoc committee to interface with relevant security agencies and stockholders in respect of incessant attacks of kidnappers, assassins, banditry, and other criminal elements in and around these two local government areas through its letter dated 3rd August 2023,” he said. “It is pertinent to state that incidence of kidnapping in Southeast region particularly in the second quarter.
But he gave the committee his word that every effort would be made to apprehend the criminals and bring about the region’s return to calm.
The threat of kidnapping has recently decreased thanks to actions taken by the Nigerian army’s Division in collaboration with other security agencies, he claimed.
