England forward Chloe Kelly has hailed the team’s spirited display in their last-16 contest against Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The European champions won the tie 4-2 on penalties after 120 minutes of thrilling action.
The Three Lionesses played second fiddle to the Super Falcons for the majority of the game.
Their task was made more difficult when inspirational winger, Lauren James was sent off for stamping on Michelle Alozie in the 87th minute.
Sarina Wiegman’s side played the entire extra time with 10 men.
Kelly said they dug deep to win the contest.
“It’s amazing. Anything that’s thrown at us, we show what we’re capable of. We dug deep as a group, we believe in our ability and we believe in what we’re being told to do,” Kelly told FIFA.com.
“This team is special, we did it at the Euros, we did it at the Finalissima and we’re here again tonight doing it. We keep pushing forward. There’s more to come from this special team.”
