Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that head coach Roberto Martinez needs time to improve the team.
Ronaldo’s comments came after he led Portugal to beat Iceland 1-0 in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward scored the only goal of the match against Iceland in his 200th appearance for his country.
Speaking in the mixed zone after the match, Ronaldo said (translated from Portuguese):
“It (reaching 200 appearances) is a source of pride. [We need to] give time to our manager, who has done an excellent job, to continue to impose his ideas.
“It is giving [him] time so that things can go even better.”
Martinez joined Portugal in January this year after they parted ways with Fernando Santos following a disappointing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar
