BRT Driver Who Crashed Into Train Arraigned For Manslaughter; Remanded In Prison

An Ikeja High Court on May 2 arraigned a Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit driver, Osibanjo Oluwaseun, who collided with a moving train at Ikeja and allegedly killed six people, IGBERETV reports.

Oluwaseun was dragged before the court by the state government on 16 counts bordering on involuntary manslaughter and grievous harm.

While being arraigned before the court, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Babajide Martins, said the BRT driver negligently killed the victims by ignoring warning signals and ran into an on-coming train.

He said the defendant also negligently inflicted grievous harm on 10 other passengers on the bus.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala ordered that Osibanjo be remanded at the appropriate custodial centre, pending the filing and hearing of his bail application. The judge adjourned the case until May 26 for the commencement of trial.

Osibajo, a 44-year-old driver of the Lagos State Civil Service staff bus had a collision with a train at the PWD/ Shogunle railway line, on the Agege motor road in Lagos, on Thursday morning, March 9. Some of the wounded passengers of the bus said the driver had his earpiece on while driving and ignored the directive of the Nigerian Railway official flagging down the bus at the rail line.
