Benue govt laments killings, seeks intervention from International community

Benue State government has described endless attacks on its communities as financially burdensome, particularly in the recent times where over 18,000 residents ran to the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps.

There have been increased attacks by suspected Fulani herders on communities of Otukpo, Apa and Guma Local Government Councils in the State.

The Secretary of Benue State Emergency Management Agency, BSEMA, Doctor Emmanuel Shior, stated this while briefing newsmen in Makurdi on Tuesday.

The BSEMA boss called for intervention by the international community, saying that the development has put more financial burden on the state.

While distributing food items and other materials to victims at the IDP camp, Shior revealed that over 100 farmers were killed within one week, while 60 of those killed were recorded in Otukpo, and Apa LGAs.

“In Guma about 40 persons were killed”, he said, stressing that “with the fresh attacks, many people have run to IDPs camp and that has increased the financial burden of the state in taking care of the Internally Displaced Person, IDPs.”
