Founder of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo has claimed that an attempt is being made by the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) to manipulate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to favour the APC during the conduct of Nigeria’s 2023 general election, IGBERETV reports.
According to him, “There is an attempt to capture INEC. The 19 newly nominated INEC RECs are card-carrying APC members.”
While speaking on a Channel Television program, ‘Politics Today’, Itodo advised that the power to appoint Electoral Commission chairmen and resident commissioners be removed from the president and vested on an independent body so as to avoid partisanship among the electoral commissioners. He also advised the National Assembly to rise to protect Nigeria’s democracy by rejecting such appointments.
Samson Itodo is a Nigerian lawyer and founder of Yiaga Africa, a non-governmental organisation whose mission is to promote democracy in Africa.
