President Buhari has returned to Twitter 11 months after he stopped tweeting following the ban on Twitter in Nigeria, IGBERETV reports.
The Buhari administration banned Twitter after the platform deleted tweets by the president, threatening to treat members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the “language they understand”.
The ban was announced on June 4, 2021 and was lifted on January, 13, 2022, after 7 months.
The President stopped addressing citizens via Twitter, as a result of the ban. Even when the ban was lifted and many politicians and their aides returned to the platform, Buhari didn’t return until Monday, May 2, 2022. His last tweet was on June 1, 2021.
In his first tweet in 11 months, Buhari sent his best wishes to Muslims celebrating Eid-el-Fitr while addressing the problem of insecurity in the country.
Read his tweets below.
“As we celebrate #EidMubarak with joy amidst friends & family members, we’re fully conscious that many families are in a state of anxiety on account of the many captives held by terrorists against their will, including those taken away after the tragic #AbujaKadunaRail bombing.
Rescuing the abducted victims is a delicate situation that requires wisdom, caution and also patience. Any rescue operation that results in the death of any hostage cannot be deemed a success. The government doesn’t want this kind of tragic outcome.
This is a complex situation that demands proper handling. The primary objective of any rescue operation is to free the hostages safely, unharmed and alive.
Eid Mubarak!”
