So much has been said about the 2023 presidential election, and about Bola Tinubu contesting it. Though the APC chieftain is yet to officially declare his interest, he has not actually shut down solidarity visits to him in effect to that.
The former governor of Lagos State and the National leader of the APC, is being touted as the favorite to succeed president Buhari. Quite a handful of politicians have drummed up support for him, and visited him even when he was outside of Nigeria.
Well, Tinubu is a seasoned politician, most importantly a regional political god in the west. He has so many loyalists in his side, should get decide to run.
The issue is that, Tinubu is getting old and many political analysts believe he should step aside and support a younger candidate. Many writers, including myself, have opined that he step aside and support someone like Yemi Osinbajo, current vice president.
There are also suggestions and opinions, that APC should field a candidate from the Southeast, at least to foster political inclusiveness of the Southeast, and calm cries of regional marginalization.
Carrying all the regions along politically, either by federal character or otherwise, helps the case for unity.
It is therefore, our political assessment, that Tinubu is taking all these into consideration, after meeting with senator Orji Kalu. They made a case of how national interests trumps personal interest.
While the reason for Tinubu visiting with Kalu is “the way forward for the country” , as vaguely disclosed by Tinubu, we can still be within the ambit of acute political reasoning to suspect a deal for 2023 presidential election.
So, if Tinubu happens to endorse Orji Kalu, then the support of the West is almost guaranteed and the Southeast will most likely see one of their own being given the nor by the APC. Not only will it further sell the APC to the Igbos, but the alliance will be in the interest of the nation no doubt.
A politician of Tinubu’s calibre can even convince the north to support Orji Kalu, after all, like he said, the interest of the nation is greater than that of any individual.
