Members of the University of Port Harcourt branch of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, on Friday, staged a protest in rejection of the proposed sharing formula of the N22.12 billion earned allowance by the federal government, IgbereTV reports.
The delay in the disbursement of the money is however due to the disagreement by SSANU and NASU.
The university workers who marched around UNIPORT campus threatened indefinite strike should the government go ahead to implement the 75% (for academic staff) against 25% (non-teaching staff) sharing formula.
The branch Chairman of SSANU, Bernard Ezebunwo-Chukwu, who addressed journalists, said âwe have been clamoring for the change but they donât seem to harken to what we are saying.â
âThis protest is to tell the world that what happened before is going to happen again.
Also speaking the branch Chairman of NASU, Ogbaegbe Osoruchi, announced a two-week ultimatum for the federal government to reverse the released sharing formula or âexpect strikeâ.
He also called for the payment of their âminimum wage arrearsâ which is already âoverdueâ.
The protest was called by the National leadership of the Joint Action Committee of the two unions.
