By Wisdom Nwedene, Abakaliki

The Council Boss of Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Engr Felix Ogbonna Igboke has condemned the killing of over eight persons in the area by yet-to-be identified gunmen.

In a statement signed by him and made available to IGBERE TV, Engr Igboke described the ugly incident which happened on 6th October as “worrisome, disheartening, barbaric, condemnable and the height of man’s inhumanity to man.”

He further said that as a government, they are deeply saddened by the development and still wonder why some fellows will derive joy in cutting short the life of fellow human beings unprovoked and in such a cruel manner.

According to him,”in Thursday’s attack, the hoodlums who came in cars succeeded in gaining entrance into the council’s secretariat as visitors and immediately opened fire on the police officers securing the area and in the process gunned down two of them.
Other officers around engaged and subsequently repelled them.”

” They hoodlums did not stop there after being repelled. They moved down to Onicha Igboeze through nkwoagu Isu junction shooting everyone they could see.”

“They killed one driver along the way, shot another at a filling station in Enuagu Onicha, ran into a sienna bus, snatched it, killed the three occupants including a lawyer and transfered themselves into it and zoomed off after setting ablaze the one they came in.”

“One question that has remained unanswered in these incessant attacks on our people is, the motive and what the perpetrators and sponsors of this wickedness stand to gain.
Is it for political power? Is that enough to kill your brothers and sisters? no!”.

“Is it part of the agitation in the zone? off course no genuine agitator in the struggle can kill the people he is agitating and fighting for their ‘freedom’.”

“Let me at this juncture assure our people that the security agencies have swung into action and will by the grace of God apprehend those behind these atrocities.”

“Those sponsoring this for any reason should have a rethink. They should know that no ambition is worth the life of another person. Let us respect the sanctity of life.”

“Any agitation other than the marginalization we all know should be made known to the government as we are very open and ready for negotiations and dialogue.”

“As I sympathize with the families of the gallant officers killed, my brothers and sisters from Onicha Igboeze and others who lost their loved ones in the incident, may I urge our people to go about their legitimate businesses as adequate measures are being taken to ensure their safety.”

“We pray God to bring repentance into the heart of those behind our pains, amen.”
