Report just filtering in now can authoritatively confirm that the President of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli, has died after complications from an undisclosed illness.
The country has been thrown into mourning following the announcement by Vice President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, of the demise of her boss.
In a statement she issued live on state tv, she said that the president passed away around 6 PM from heart complications at a hospital in the capital, Dar es Salaam.
Magufuli made headlines early this year when he downplayed the covid-19 pandemic, which some of his aides insinuate is the cause of his death.
The president was aged 61 years.
