The Enugu State Government has confirmed that Yellow Fever is the cause of the reports of a strange illness in Igbo-Eze North, Nsukka, Isi-Uzo and Igbo-Etiti Local Government Areas of Enugu State.
As more reports are being received, the Enugu State Ministry of Health Rapid Response Team, LGA Rapid Response Teams, Enugu State Ministries, Departments and Agencies, National and International Health Partners will continue active case search in all the LGAs in Enugu State to ensure that no one, may be suffering in silence.
A statement signed by Dr Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, Hon. Commissioner of Health, said Government owned hospitals are being prepositioned, and are treating our patients.
Reactive Mass Vaccination for Yellow Fever commenced in Igbo-Eze North LGA on the 11th of November, in Nsukka LGA on the 18th of November and in Isi-Uzo LGA on the 19th of November 2020.
The National Arbovirus and Vector Research Centre has isolated the Specific Mosquito Vector Specie in this epidemic (The Aedes Spp) and vector control measures commenced in Igbo-Eze North LGA.
We recommend that the good people of Enugu State adhere to the following Public Health Advisory:
*Yellow Fever is transmitted through mosquito bites, thus remove mosquito breeding sites (stagnant water and bushes) around your environment.
*Yellow Fever Vaccination is not a treatment for Yellow Fever, it is for the prevention of Yellow Fever.
*If you have been vaccinated against Yellow Fever within the last ten years, you do not need to be vaccinated again.
*It takes 10 days or more for Yellow Fever vaccine to start working after you have received it.
*If you or your loved one are not feeling well, please visit or take your loved one to a nearby hospital for treatment
*Trained Health Workers can recognize diseases of public health importance and know what to do
