The Ogun State Police Command has arrested five suspected cultists who unleashed terror on residents of Ifo town in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, IgbereTV reports.

Spokesperson of the Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the arrest in a statement, said the suspects, Afeez Olapade alias Sabiko, 22; Idowu Adebayo, 18; Oduwaye Seyi alias Owo Aje, 22; Fatai Olude, 22 and Alabi Segun, 22 were apprehended after they stormed the market area in Ifo, attacked people with dangerous weapons and dispossessed them of their valuables.

He said the Divisional Police Officer of Ifo Police Division, Adeniyi Adekunle, who got wind of the attack, mobilised men to arrest the suspects while others escaped.

“Upon the distress call, the DPO, Ifo division, Adeniyi Adekunle, quickly mobilised his men and moved to the scene. On getting there, they met a 25-year-old man, who was later identified simply as Sunday, in the pool of his own blood as a result of several injuries inflicted on his body,” the statement reads.

“The policemen chased the suspects and got five of them arrested within the area. The victim was, thereafter, taken to the General Hospital in Ifo, where he was confirmed dead.

“Also injured was one Muhammed, a trailer driver and one Olalekan Alade, who was also dispossessed of his phone by the suspected hoodlums while five other different phones snatched from different people were recovered from them,” he added.

Oyeyemi said the suspects would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department(SCIID) for thorough investigation as directed by the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun.

Fleeing members of the gang would be hunted and brought to face justice within the shortest possible time, the PPRO assured.

Opeyemi warned those who still think the police had abandoned their duties as a result of the #EndSARS protests to have a rethink or be dealt with.
