IgbereTV reports that Mr. Emmanuel Opoku who poured hot water on his breastfeeding wife’s breasts has been arraigned at the Enugu South Magistrate court on Tuesday, 14th July 2020.
The accused was charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. IgbereTV earlier reported that Mr. Opoku who lives with his wife and two children – a son and a three-month-old baby in Akwuke, Enugu State was arrested for pouring hot water on the breasts of his wife after she asked him for money to purchase some food items.
According to the charge sheet, No: MES/ 226 c/ 20, Mr. Opoku unlawfully poured hot water on Mrs. Opoku’s two breasts which caused her grievous bodily harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 290 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Vol. II Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.
Barr. Mrs. Ijeoma Ezeude, Barr. Onyeonagu and Dr. Nick Agbo, who are from a Human Rights group and are counsels to Mrs. Opoku, worked in conjunction with Police Prosecutor, Inspector Otibe Innocent, to strongly oppose a bail application made by Mr. Opoku.
The magistrate who refused the bail application on the ground of public interest, remanded the accused person in Police custody.
