Factcheck: Ogbete Market NOT Completely Closed, Traders Happy With Ugwuanyi

Following a report that a popular market in Enugu State, Ogbete Main Market was completely shutdown, Igbere TV correspondent on early hours of Tuesday morning visited the market and confirmed that the report is fake news.

The story which was first published by a blog known for peddling fake news also alleged that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State was thrown sachet water but Igbere TV correspondent who interviewed some traders discovered that it was equally false.

Speaking with Igbere TV correspondent, a trader who identified her as Mrs. Ikechukwu said all the traders are aware that most sections of Ogbete Main Market, like other markets in Enugu State were closed.

And it was for health reasons which have to do with the containment of the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

She said : ” All the traders know why most sections of Ogbete Main Market, like other markets in Enugu State were closed. It was for health reasons which have to do with the containment of the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).”

“Ogbete Main Market is not completely closed as being mischievous alleged and Ogbete is not the only market that is not fully operating in Enugu State today.”

“Health is first…”

Another trader, Mr. Obinna Ugwu described the report that Ugwuanyi was thrown sachet water by Opera News as a mischievous avenue created by the Chinese to mislead and exploit gullible Nigerians with fake news stories that attract traffic.

He said Gov. Ugwuanyi never visited Akwatta section of Ogbete Market Enugu recently, not to talk of being thrown satchet water at by the traders.

The angry visible man said. “So, this stupid, false and mischievous news story about Gov. Ugwuanyi, Ogbete traders and throwing of sachet water first peddled
by a blog known for peddling fake news”

“First, Gov. Ugwuanyi has never gone to Akwatta section of Ogbete Market Enugu recently, not to talk of being thrown satchet water at by the traders.”

“If this trumped-up allegation was true, where is the video clip of the incident? And why is it not trending on social media? Or is it possible that in this smart phone age, nobody in the entire said market captured it?”

“Social media freedom has gotten most Nigerians, especially those in Enugu State, to lose focus and behave in strange manners, encouraging non issues and evil.”

“The blog is just a mischievous avenue created by the Chinese to mislead and exploit gullible Nigerians with fake news stories that attract traffic.”

“Some news outlets just recruit Nigerian youths as free lancers, pay them peanuts and ask them to be writing and sending to their automated system anything that can trend on social media and attract traffic for them to get returns from Google.”

“The public should be wary of this fake news and stop believing every story on the Internet.”
