The 17 Local Government Councils in Enugu State have shown leadership and demonstrated utmost commitment in complementing the state government’s efforts in awareness campaigns and provision of palliatives to residents of the state at the rural communities, since the unfortunate outbreak of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the country.
This commitment by the Councils, which was acknowledged by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in his Easter Message to the people of Enugu State, has been widely felt by the less privileged and vulnerable groups in the rural communities across the 17 LGAs of the state.
Igbere TV reports that the Council Chairman, Hon. Chukwudi Nnadozie, accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor, Hon. Jonathan Chukwuma, the State Woman Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lady Vera Ezeugwu, the Party’s National Ex-Officio, Hon. Amaka Ezea and other stakeholders were distributing relief materials meant for the less privileged and People With Disabilities (PWDs) across the 16 electoral wards of the council.
Presenting the palliatives to some PWDs present at the event, the Uzo-Uwani Council Chairman, who noted that the exercise was the first phase, commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for his unique leadership role and untiring efforts in ensuring that COVID-19 is contained in the state.
Hon. Nnadozie disclosed that Ugwuanyi was “the first governor to release the sum of N330 million to a State Multi-Sectoral Rapid Response Team to fight and contain the spread of this deadly virus”.
He stated that the governor has continued to support the team with all they need to discharge their duties, adding that the state government has also been providing palliatives to PWDs and the poorest of the poor through the churches as well as other platforms.
The Council Chairman pointed out that what they are doing across the 17 LGAs is complementary to the programmes of the state government in terms of palliatives and enlightenment campaign, and urged “all political appointees and other public spirited individuals or groups to come and support the government in this noble cause”.
Responding on behalf of the PWDs, Onyebuchi Urama thanked the Council Chairman, other stakeholders and the state government for the relief materials, stressing that “no government in Uzo-Uwani LGA has recognized the People With Disabilities in the Council”.
