Former Senator, Shehu Sanni in a latest statement has reacted to the issue of begging which is popular especially in the Northern part of the country, according to IgbereTV reports
Recall that the Emir of Kano, Muhammed Sanusi had stated people who beg for money from individuals should channel their demand to the government. The Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje had also announced a ban on street begging by children popularly referred to as Almajiris.
Shehu Sanni in his statement stated that no law can stop begging if made.
He stated that many states in the country at some point had made laws against begging but it never worked. He stressed that the factors contributing to begging must first be addressed.
He said, “A Law no matter how punitive can’t stop or end begging. Many states tried it in the last twenty years,it never worked. The Economic,Social,Religious and Cultural contributing factors must be addressed.A law enforced can disperse them for a while and the factors will return them.”
