The federal government and governors of Southwest states have agreed to set up a legal framework to legalise the establishment of “Operation Amotekun”.
The agreement was reached after a closed door meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Igbere TV reports.
Osinbajo met the southwest Governors immediately after the expanded National Economic Council (NEC) meeting which he presided over.
Also in attendance at the meeting was the minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
Igbere TV recalls that Malami, who doubles as Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), had earlier opposed the security outfit which he referred to as”illegal”.
Commenting, Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu said the noise generated over the establishment of Amotekun was needless and now there is a middle ground is in the interest of all interested parties.
The AGF refused to comment on the matter despite pressure from journalists but seemed satisfied with the outcome of the meeting.
