Aba born philanthropist, Chief Alex Ikwechegh on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 paid a visit to victims of the police attacks in Ndiegoro, a Community in Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The police had reportedly burn down several buildings, and arrested a dozen of men and women between Sept. 26 to Oct. 1 in what could be termed as a reprisal attack.
At least nine buildings were burnt down with over 50 men and women arrested, in retaliation for the killing of a police officer and a driver in the said area.
Igbere TV reports that the former Aba North Council chairman, during the visit, donated household items including mattresses, pots, buckets, food items and clothing for 1,000 persons.
He equally promised to hold a technical workshop for people living in the neighbourhood before the end of year, which he said is aimed at encouraging acquisition of skills for the youths to be gainfully employed.
“This is more so important to reduce the crime rates and incidents that could cause face-off with the police officers in Ngwa Road area”, chief Ikwechegh said.
“Wealth dissolves crime reasonably. As such it is my wish to empower youths in this area with gainful skills so that they can make livings for themselves and avoid criminal inclinations”, he added.
Commenting, a resident in the neighbourhood who spoke on behalf of the affected persons, hailed Chief Ikwechegh’s gesture, describing him as God sent.
“Philanthropy is natural”, he said. “Not everyone is kind. We hail Chief Alex Ikwechegh who has consistently shown good leadership examples”.
Reports has it that a police officer attached to Cameroun Barracks (Ndiegoro) police station and a civilian driver were killed by assailants, at a police checkpoint in Ama Nmonwu area of Aba.
Witnesses said scores of policemen returned to Ndiegoro later in the evening without warrant and arrested over 50 residents including children.
“The indiscriminate arrests continued till Tuesday 1 October 2019 when the police returned with about 12 Hilux vehicle and randomly set at least 9 buildings and shops on fire.”
