The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a certificate of return to former governor of Abia and Senator-elect (Abia North), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, popularly called OUK, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the event is taking place at the International Conference Centre, ICC, in Abuja.

Kalu was issued the certificate by the chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

Others issued with the certificates include Senators Ifeanyi Ubah (Anambra South) of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Dino Melaye (Kogi West) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 99 other Senators-elect.

The upper legislative chamber has a total of 109 seats with 3 Senators from each of the 36 states plus one from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Igbere TV reports that according to the results officially announced for the February 23 National Assembly elections across the country, APC won 63 seats while the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won 38 seats.

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) is the only party outside of the two dominant ones that will resume the ninth Senate with only one seat.

Igbere TV reports that the seat for the Imo West Senatorial district is also currently up in the air. INEC said its official was forced to announce the state’s outgoing governor, Rochas Okorocha, as the winner.

Seven (7) seats remain outstanding, as INEC says it will conduct a supplementary poll for the affected districts March 23.

Same certificates of return will be issued to newly elected members of the Federal House of Representatives also known as lower or green chambers 2pm today.

Again, the APC has majority Rep members with a total of 211 seats declared in its favour so far. The PDP has 109, while APGA has 5.

Others are ADC 3, AA 2, PRP 2, APM 1, SDP 1 and ADP 1.

A total of 25 seats are outstanding in the green chambers, with INEC promising to conduct supplementary polls in the affected constituencies March 23.

Igbere TV reports that Dr. Kalu had emerged winner of the keenly contested February 23 National Assembly election in Abia North Senatorial district.

He polled 31,201 votes to defeat incumbent senator Mao Ohuabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 20,801 votes.

The declaration was made by Charles Anumudu, the INEC Returning Officer for the district.
