African Woman Finally Arrives Spain After Being Left To Drown In The Mediterranean.

40-year-old migrant who was rescued in the Mediterranean after an NGO accused Libya of leaving her to drown has arrived in the Spanish port of Palma. Two ships belonging to Proactiva Open Arms were escorted to the capital of Majorca by a Spanish police ship on Saturday morning, carrying 40-year-old Josepha as well as the bodies of a boy and another woman.

Josepha, from Cameroon, was taken to Spain after Proactiva accused coastguards of leaving her behind and deflating her dinghy, a claim which Libya fiercely denies.

Proactiva said it transported her to Spain for her ‘protection’ after picking her up 85 miles off the coast of Libya, and to enable her to testify freely. Italy had earlier offered to take in the woman but not the bodies.

The rescue group has accused Libyan coastguards of having saved the rest of the migrants on board the dinghy but not the two women and the child.

The NGO alleges the migrants refused to board the rescue vessel and go back to Libya and that the coastguards left them and deflated the dinghy as a result.

Rescuers are known to let air out of migrants boats to stop them from being re-used and this boat had been slashed with a knife.

Libyan coastguards denied Proactiva’s accusations and said they rescued 165 migrants from a boat in the same area on Monday night, without leaving anyone on board.

Ayoub Qasim, a spokesperson for the Libyan Navy, said he had no idea what the NGO was referring to and said it must have been a different boat that they had not come across.

Abdallah Omar Toumia, head of the coastguard, added: ‘This is absolutely not true. ‘We never in any of our rescue operations could have saved somebody and left them behind. This is false fabrication.’

He went on: ‘As coastguards, every time we are able to rescue one soul it is a day of celebration for us. When we lose one soul it affects us.’

Spanish rescuers said the boy found dead on Tuesday was around five years old.

The rescue ship’s medical team found Josepha was in a stable condition but said she was traumatised, adding that she needed medical and psychological treatment ‘as soon as possible’.
