Alex Otti & Abbot's Family Feud: Chikwe Udensi Distances Self, Opens 'Can-of-worms'

A chieftain of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia state, Chief Chikwe Udensi has distanced himself from the alleged feud between the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2015, Dr. Alex Otti and the family of his campaign Director General, late Chief Otisi Kalu (Abbot).

In a release titled, Ken Ahia forged Abbot’s Will –Abbot’s family, Udensi said his attention was drawn to a recent publication which the said Ahia claimed that Abbot’s Will was not forged.

Udensi said he could not have bordered about the publication, but because his name was derogatorily mentioned in the publication as the one instigating the Abbot family to take action against perceived wrong doing against them, that he was responding to keep the records staright.

Udensi said that sometime ago, one Mr. Onuoha sought his assistance in respect of a petition written by his (Onuoha’s) sister in-law, Mrs. Juliet Ada Kalu (the widow of late Chief Abbot) to the police.

According to Udensi, “I was astonished and very shocked by the stories and details of the petition, but was reluctant getting involved because the name of my brother Alex Otti was principal to the matter. I was also concerned about the fact that we are seeking the same political office and it may be misconstrued as a witch-hunt.”

The APGA guber aspirant informed that persistent pressure from the Abbot family for assistance made him to try to find out the nitty-gritty of the matter.

Udensi said in the cause of his investigation, he found out that following the allegation of the forgery of the late Abbot’s Will by his family in a petition to the Inspector General of Police signed by Mrs. Ada Juliet Kalu (Abbot’s wife), a team of investigators from SARS arrested three staff of the Probate Registry High Court of Lagos who during their interrogation, it was revealed that one Barr. Adetokunbo Odutola, 14 months after the death of Abbot, deposited a Will purporting it to have been deposited by the late Abbot while he was alive.

The APGA chieftain said based this; the said Oduta was arrested and detained by the police.

Udensi said further investigation he made on the issue revealed that, “the Will was forged in collaboration with the staff of the Probate Registry and confessional statements were made to this effect. In fact, the forged Will was captioned ‘Will of Prince Abbot Otisi Kalu’. The forgers of the Will and the perpetrators of this heinous crime though familiar with late chief Abbot, but unknown to them, the name, ‘Chief Abbot’ is just a nickname. His real names are Otisi J.N. Kalu.

“The forged Will also showed that Alex Otti is a beneficiary of the Will as Barr. Odutola made vigorous efforts through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to change the ownership structure of KONEX associates Ltd, a company owned by late Chief Abbot. About 70 percent of the ownership of the company was to be fraudulently transferred to Alex Otti by Barr. Odutola.”

Udensi to press on the fact that Abbot’s Will was forged and that Ken Ahia knew everything about it said “Barr. Odutola revealed in writing during investigation that he was not the author of the Will but was acting on the instructions of Ken Ahia and that the forged Will was prepared and handed over to him by Ken Ahia. Odutola also voluntarily revealed that he was directed by Alex Otti to pay to him proceeds from the rent of Abbot’s property located at No. 126 Bode Thomas Street, Suruelere, Lagos.

“Further investigations revealed that the family of late Chief Abbot laid a complaint to the police that Ken Ahia also forged a Power of Attorney which was prepared and doctored in Nigeria and rushed to the bedside in the United States for signatures, but he was too weak to respond to Ahia’s request.

“The family also alleged that prior to the arrival of the body of late Chief Abbot from America, Ken Ahia and Alex Otti had commenced a systematic looting and conversion of late Abbot’s assets without the knowledge and consent of the family by selling goods in the warehouses of KONEX Associates Ltd. and transferring the proceeds to Alex Otti.

“The family also alleges that Alex Otti collected several millions of Naira from late Chief Abbot’s friends and associates for his burial and have diverted and converted same for personal use, refusing to give account to the family. The family of Abbot is in court with Alex Otti in suit No. LD/3087GCMW/2016.”

Udensi noted that Chief Abbot died in October 2015, while the forged Will was deposited in Igbosere Probate Registry in January 2017 by Barr. Odutola and in April 2018, Ken Ahia during interrogation, for the first time admitted he wrote a Will for Abbot.

Udensi said that Ken Ahia had the effrontery to deny forging Abbot’s Will and making fallacious comments about him because he and his master were saved from prosecution by some influencial Nigerians.

“My decision to say away from the controversy was also strongly based on my believe in not inheriting anybody’s enemies or become a party to any form of false allegations or injustice against the innocent. I deemed it pertinent at this point to release these facts in order to stop Ken Ahia from hawking fallacies and deceiving the unsuspecting members of the public”, Udensi said.

Udensi while saying he discussed the issue with Prof. Onyi Nwagbara who he described as a friend and brother and they agreed on his non involvement on the matter; he however denied ever meeting Abbot’s wife no spoken with her on phone as alleged by Ken Ahia, stating that regardless, “This is not by choice because I will be very glad and delighted to meet her and I have even asked her elder brother to arrange a meeting. I will seek the consent of the family to step into this matter.”

Udensi said as a result of the foregoing, “When I heard that a character like Ken Ahia applied to be a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), I was bewildered because it amounts to total mockery of the legal profession. Our Judicial system should not be ridiculed by admitting such a questionable character with criminal allegations as a Senior Advocate.”
