ASUU strike paralyses academic activities, ongoing examinations‎ at Unilorin

The strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), paralyzed academic activities and the ongoing Masters degree examinations in some faculties at the University of Ibadan on Monday.

DAILY POST gathered that students in the department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences who were scheduled to start their examinations were turned back due to the strike.

Although it was gathered that the institution’s academic staff had voted in favour of the strike at its referendum last week, the news about the strike was just passed to members Monday (today) morning.

Other examinations slated at the Faculty of the Social Sciences were also cancelled due to the industrial action.

By noon, most academic activities had been halted.

Chairman, UI chapter of ASUU, Dr. Deji Omole confirmed the commencement of the strike in a mail sent to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Idowu Olayinka.

Omole stated the strike was necessary due to abysmal level of implementation of the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement, 2013 MoU and the shortfall in salaries leading to fractional payment of staff salaries.

He stated further that the strike was total, comprehensive and indefinite beginning from Sunday 13, August, 2017.

“We therefore write to inform you that the observance of the strike action will include: No teaching, no examination, no supervision, no attendance of the statutory meetings of any kind and other academic matters. In line with the National directive of the union, our members will henceforth withdraw their services till the end of the strike.”

Omole who later spoke with journalists maintained that the strike will have full enforcement from tomorrow after briefing the congress of the Union on campus.

He said the union had waited for the federal government to do the needful but wondered why the federal government had been deceiving the Union, condemning the withholding of the License of the Nigerian University Pension Company (NUPEMCO) while holding N1billion of the Union since three years ago.
