Buhari Committed Treason in 1983: "His Coup, Others Selfish" - Gowon

FORMER head of State, General Yakubu Gowon has said that the coups and counter coups that followed his administration can only be explained to be for other considerations other than the defence of the Nigerian Unity. He stated this yesterday in Abuja at a book launch titled; ‘Vindication of a General’ written by Lieutenant General (Dr) Ishaya Rizi Bamaiyi. He also said that the role he played and the position he took during the 30months civil war was not planned but foisted on him by the circumstances of the politics of the time.

“It became my bounding duty during this unfortunate and difficult period of Nigeria’s political history, threatened with cessation, to rally the military and the population to preserve the ideal of unity (One Nigeria) that was bestowed to us by our founding fathers.

“On reflection, the circumstance that brought about the military coups in Nigeria and thus brought the military into politics is responsible to the cycle of coups and counter coups that followed then till the late 1990’s.

“This has led me to the inexorable conclusion that the musical chairs of coups and counter coups that followed after me could only be explained to be for other considerations rather than for the defence of Nigeria’s unity for which so much blood was shed and life sacrificed. General Bamaiyi’s ‘Vindication of a General’ provides unassailable evidence that thisconclusion is not misplaced.

“The book is mark of rare spirit of forthrightness, laying bare the truth of what happened in the latter days of Gen. Abacha’s leadership and the brief period of Gen. Adbdusalami Abubakar’s time in office, without allowing his emotions and sentiments to affect or influence his presentation.” He said Meanwhile Lieutenant General (Dr) Ishaya Rizi Bamaiyi in his remarks also called on the officers in the Nigerian military to always strive to ensure better welfare for their soldiers. While commending the effort of this present administration in prioritizing the soldiers welfare which he attributed the success recorded in the fight against insurgency in the North East, he said that it is rather unfortunate that officers in the military don’t seems to be bothered about the welfare of their soldiers.

“The officers don’t seem to bother about the welfare of the soldiers that is why I said that if there are no soldiers there will be no officers. “The other one is the neglect itself in the part of the military but fortunately the present administration is taking very good care of the soldiers that is why the operations in the North East has succeeded although we should not be excited yet since insurgency is not an operation that we can finish overnight.” He said.
