Why Southern Kaduna killings have continued for 35 years - El-Rufai - 15 min

Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna state has said that the Southern Kaduna crises have continued for the past 35 years because the culprits have neither been punished nor prosecuted for their crimes.

El Rufai made the disclosure on Tuesday, January 31, when the Senate committee set up to investigate the Southern Kaduna crisis paid him a courtesy call, The New Telegraph reports

The Governor warned the perpetrators of the violence they will be punished this time around.

He however, described those linking him with killings in Southern part of the state as mischief makers.

According to the Nation, El Rufai said he is neither a religious bigot nor ethnic jingoist who will organise crisis in his state.
The governor told the Senate committee that his administration inherited three main problems of cattle rustling, urban gang called “Shara Suka” and communal killings.

He said: “When we came in we met three main problems on ground, cattle rustling, urban gang and communal killings.

“As the chief security officer of the state, we really do not have control over the security agencies, we have committed so much in funding security agencies in the state. We have bought bullet proof vest and vans for security agencies. We have committed N4 billion in support of security agencies in the state.

“The state government will continue to support the security agencies in the state even though it is the responsibility of the federal government.”
The governor called on the Nigerian government to increase the funding of the security agencies to enable them adequately deal with the attacks in the southern part of the state and other internal security challenges across the country.
